Gangtok, Nov 4: In response to last year’s glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) that heavily damaged infrastructure, the Sikkim government has announced plans to open a fair-weather alternative road to North Sikkim within a fortnight. Efforts continue to restore the region’s primary roads, which remain severely impacted.
Sikkim’s Minister for Roads and Bridges, N.B. Dahal, emphasized the government’s commitment to securing connectivity to the border areas, highlighting both security concerns and the difficulties faced by locals.
“Our department, alongside the army and the GREF (a wing of the army), is working in coordination to establish reliable connectivity for security and to alleviate the challenges locals are enduring,” Dahal said, speaking to reporters on Sunday.
The planned route, covering the Mangan-Chungthang stretch, will provide temporary access, though Dahal cautioned, “Being a fair-weather road, it may not withstand monsoon impacts.”
Since the GLOF, access to North Sikkim has only been possible via a circuitous route through Dzongu, as the main Mangan-Chungthang route remains closed. The new road will link Chungthang town in North Sikkim with the village of Naga, located 15 kilometers from Mangan, the district headquarters.
