Shillong, Feb 26: In a major accident on Sunday, 6 people including a Catholic Priest, Brothers and Catholic nuns died on the spot after their vehicle (Mahindra Bolero) met with a head-on collision with a 12- tyre truck at Umbang, Sumer, Ri Bhoi district.
The accident took place at around 2 PM in the afternoon. The 12-tyre truck carrying cement bearing registration number WB 41-G-7268 was travelling to Assam, whilst the Bolero, bearing registration number AS26-B-7908, was on its way to Shillong.
According to the Police, the truck was overspeeding and lost control on a hard turning at Umbang, Sumer and rammed into the Bolero in which the 6 deceased were travelling. The victims including 3 men (Catholic Priest and two Brothers) and 3 women (Catholic nuns) belonged to the Diocese of Bongaigaon, Assam.
Meanwhile, the truck driver and his helper sustained major injuries, and have been admitted to Shillong Civil Hospital.
A case has also been registered and the police is moving forward with the investigation.
The bodies of the deceased have been kept at Nongpoh Civil Hospital for post-mortem and police is trying to ascertain their identities.
