‘Someone’ already campaigning as Cong candidate in East Shillong: Ampareen on unlikeliness of getting Cong ticket

Must read

Shillong, May 17: Suspended Congress MLA and East Shillong legislator Dr Ampareen Lyngdoh on Tuesday said she is unlikely to contest the East Shillong constituency from a Congress ticket for the 2023 Assembly elections as she has heard that a person is already campaigning in the constituency claiming to the Indian National Congress (INC) candidate.

At the same time, she also alleged that the Congress is trying to create complications and has not given the five MLAs freedom and that her decision to join any other party will depend on the demand of the people from her constituency.

She further maintained that switching to another party for the polls will purely be a decision based on the opinion of her people. “Suspended or not our candidature has to go on as it is based on public interest and their request, so I will take my decision and I will decide in-house with my constituents… if my constituents popularly demand that I should go to the BJP, I will go to the BJP, it is my people who will guide me not me who will guide them. My people are (my) focus. I will go to any political party which they feel will be the best option,” she said.

She further said the five MLAs will wait and be smart before jumping to any conclusions that will subsequently be ‘political suicide’ and will not bring any good to the suspended MLAs.

“You suspend, we wait; we hope they will expel (us) but if they don’t then the wait goes on… Where is the hurry, it is the Congress that has suspended us it is not us that have asked for suspension. So, he who suspends will decide what he wants to do next… We are the victims here,” she expressed.

“The suspension is for three and a half years. If the expulsion never happens then we may re-join the Congress, but in between comes the election; where we go to the election is our choice,” she said.

Congress creating complications

The East Shillong legislator said all the 5 suspended MLAs of Congress want to complete their term as legislators of the party irrespective of MPCC’s blessings or support. She, however, noted that mudslinging by the Congress is not in good taste.

“If you go mudslinging through the media and start bashing parties, because of our predicament, it would not be correct for the five of us to take this debate further. The system allows us to remain this way because the Congress Party has issued suspension for a period of three years. What that suspension means and why this period of three and a half years was selected, we are not privy to any of those discussions,” she expressed.

Miffed with the way the suspension order was issued by the Congress against the 5 MLAs, she said, “The Congress Party has not freed us, they have not given us any freedom. They are trying to create complications for us but it doesn’t matter. We are in a democratic system wherein suspended MLAs can choose to remain suspended; so, we choose to remain suspended.”
