Shillong, April 2: Two people were on Friday evening assaulted at Jatalong Village in Ri-Bhoi District, leading to a tense situation in the area as it borders Assam.
Jatalong is one of the disputed areas between Assam and Meghalaya, which will be taken up in second phase to resolve the areas of difference between the two states.
Two locals, identified as Sildron Mukhim and Barnabas Lyngdoh, both residents of Khyndewso village, were assaulted at Jatalong Village on Friday evening. However, the reason for the incident isn’t clear although an official at the scene said it was a case of misunderstanding.
He said talks are being carried out between the Khasi and Nepali headmen to ensure peace prevails along the interstate border.
Meanwhile, Mukhim said Lyngdoh was assaulted first when he was standing outside a shop, and Mukhim was also injured when he tried to intervene.
Following the attack several others from Khyndewso, Mawlasnai, Tyrso, Umlaper came out in large numbers which led to a huge altercation in the area between the locals and the Nepali community, which are in majority in the bordering village.
Mukhim alleged that it looked like a premeditated attack because just few days ago another Khasi youth was attacked.
Once the police arrived, the situation was brought under control. Additionally, police have put stringent curfew like restrictions in place on people’s movements to ensure that the incident doesn’t flare-up.
