TURA, Oct 20: History has been in the making for the lawyers profession of Garo Hills after two of its advocates successfully contested and won membership in the Bar Council of Meghalaya, the apex body for lawyers which is directly affiliated to the Bar Council of India in New Delhi.
The two young Tura based lawyers, Devorsi G Momin and Paul Roy Paske participated in the 23rd September election and triumphed when results were declared on Thursday for the 15 member body that will oversee the welfare and development of the lawyers of the state and coordinate with the bar council.
This is the first election and formation of the Meghalaya Bar Council since the formation of the Meghalaya High Court that came to be established in 2013.
The election for the council was held at three places, namely, Shillong, Tura and Jowai.
“This is a great achievement for Garo Hills. I am elated because this is first election since creation of the High Court in Meghalaya and we achieved cent percent success. There were two of us in the contest and both were elected,” an excited Paul Roy Paske told media persons after the announcement of the results on October 20th in Shillong.
The Garo Hills members of the state bar council, Devorsi G Momin and Paul Roy Paske are successful lawyers who take up both criminal and civil suits in the District Session Court in Tura. Paul RRoy Paske also practises in the Meghalaya High Court.
They will now be rubbing shoulders with some of the most prominent names of the lawyers world in the state, particularly S P Mahanta, Subir Ranjan Sen, Kishore Ch Gautam, Kupar Singh Kynjing, T T Diengdoh, N G Shylla and Sujit Dey.
