Tura police unearths Crores of rupees inside Bernard’s bank accounts

Must read

TURA, Aug 11: Police investigators probing the criminal connections of arrested BJP state vice president cum GHADC MDC from Tura, Bernard N Marak alias Rimpu, have allegedly stumbled upon bank accounts worth several crores of rupees which do not have any receipts to prove from where the money was coming in.

This was disclosed to media by West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Vivekanand Singh Rathore on Wednesday when Bernard was granted judicial custody by the court that simultaneously also gave permission to police to arrest him once again in a second case involving the recovery of explosives from his farmhouse.

“There is a huge sum of unaccounted money to the tune of a couple of crores of rupees in his bank accounts and when questioned he has failed to provide any credible answer or documentary proof as to where the money was coming from. Amounts ranging from 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh were frequently being deposited into his account and yet he could not provide any document or proof,” pointed out SP V S Rathore.

According to police, the investigation will follow the money trail to ascertain its source.

The Garo Hills police are non-impressed with the response of the arrested BJP leader who has reportedly tried to pass off the source of the funding with unsubstantiated claims.

“He initially claimed that the money was from government schemes but when asked to provide evidence he could not,” explained the police chief.

Bernard benefitted from Govt compensation

It was also found that the BJP leader had received land compensation from the government for a highway through Daren Agal village, located outside Tura on the road to Dalu, to the tune of over Rs 50 lakhs.

The land in question was the same place where Bernard had set up a camp to house cadres of his ANVC-B. That camp was raided by police commandos on the night of January 11, 2014, hours after suspected ANVC-B militants lobbed an IED at the main petrol station in Tura’s AOC station located at Hawakhana. While Bernard escaped the raid, four young cadres of the group who were housed in the camp were gunned down in that encounter.

Bernard received ANVC-B rehabilitation package 3 years ago

For years the ANVC-B Chairman Bernard Marak alias Rimpu had accused the central and state governments of failing to fulfil the demands of the tripartite agreement and alleged non-release of the rehabilitation package for his group.

However, the latest police investigation into his cases has found that the former militant chairman had received his share of the rehabilitation package over three years ago.

“He received his share of the surrender package amounting to Rs 1.5 lakh almost four years ago. It is there in his bank statements,” informed West Garo Hills SP V S Rathore which is a major setback to the former rebel leader who has all along been complaining of step motherly treatment from governments when it came to his organisation.
