Must read

Boko, Jan 7: Villagers of Umshek have announced that the Umshek picnic spot will be temporarily closed for ten days, from Friday, January 10, to Monday, January 20, 2025.

Umshek, a scenic picnic destination, has gained immense popularity in a short span, attracting thousands of visitors from Assam who enjoy its serene setting surrounded by hills and rivers. The Gijang River, flowing through the area, is a favored spot for picnickers to relax and enjoy their time. Umshek is located approximately 80 kilometers from Guwahati and 20 kilometers from Boko in Assam’s Kamrup district. The village lies along the Assam-Meghalaya border and falls under the 33 Rambrai-Jyrngam Legislative Assembly constituency in West Khasi Hills district, Meghalaya.

During a media interaction on Tuesday, Ellakish Sangma, a resident of Umshek, explained the reason for the temporary closure. “Our annual religious meet will be held in Umshek village this year. We request visitors from Assam to refrain from coming to the picnic spot during this period. It will reopen for the public on Tuesday, January 21, 2025,” said Sangma.

Ronth Sangma, another villager, added that the event would see participation from more than 20 villages across Assam and Meghalaya. “During the meet, villagers from other areas will stay at the picnic spot. For this reason, we have decided to temporarily close it for picnickers,” he said.
