Shillong, Jan 28: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday said he has nothing to say on the affairs of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council as his government has stayed away from interference of any kind in the district councils, and in the present case also they will do the same.
Mentionably, GHADC will be holding a special session on Saturday to take up no-confidence motion against the Executive Committee, after several MDCs resigned from their posts in the Executive Committee after losing confidence in the CEM Benedic R Marak.
“There are multiple aspects to it. Therefore, it could be anything. As I said, now let the democratic process follow. We have always maintained that we try to stay away from the interference of any kind in the district councils and we will maintain that even now,” Conrad said.
He also mentioned that the government has received letter from the chairmen as well as from different members regarding the resignation of nine Executive Members (EMs) and also received the note on the special session and the no confidence motion against the CEM.
Turmoil in GHADC
The GHADC is in a turmoil after the resignation of 9 Executive Members (EMs) from their respective posts in the GHADC Executive Committee at the start of this week citing lack of confidence in CEM Benedic R Marak whom they accuse of aligning with the opposition Trinamool, and seeking his ouster.
The CEM, who has lost support of the majority MDCs of the ruling side, has remained adamant, refusing to step down. He is said to have gained the support of the opposition Trinamool Congress MDCs and in a clear sign of his new political equation, Benedic Marak has rewarded three Trinamool MDCs to positions of Chairmanship that were left vacant by NPP MDCs who tendered their resignation and abandoned his side.
Following the development, Meghalaya Governor Satya Pal Malik on Thursday ordered for a special session of the council to hold a No-Confidence Motion (NCM) on Saturday (January 29) against the Executive Committee. He has also asked the Chairman to ensure video recording of the entire proceedings and forwarding the same to the Governor through the District Council Affairs Department.
