Shillong, Aug 10: Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Wednesday said the district administration and the police will take necessary action to maintain law and order during the upcoming first death anniversary of former HNLC leader (L) Cheristerfield Thangkhiew.
Rymbui told reporters that the government has not received any information about the statement issued by the Ka Sur Ka Bri U Hynniewtrep (KSKBUH) urging the people to put up black flags in front of their houses and vehicles from August 13 to 15, as a mark of protest against the government’s failure to take action against the police officials involved in the alleged killing of (L) Thangkhiew.
“We have not received any information about that but the district administration and the police will take necessary action to maintain law and order,” he said.
Rymbui, however, ruled out any possibility of breach of peace during the first death anniversary of (L) Thangkhiew.
“All necessary steps are being taken and the deputy chief minister had informed what steps the government is taking and what is next to be taken regarding the August 13 incident so I don’t see there is a possibility of breach of peace,” he said.
“But having said that it is duty of the government, it is duty of police and citizen to be vigilant so that there will be no breach of peace,” the home minister added.
The KSKBUH had also asked the government not to deploy any police personnel from August 12 to 15, if it wants to ensure that the first death anniversary of Thangkhiew passed off peacefully on August 13.
