Shillong, April 7: As World Health Day is celebrated to promote awareness of people’s general health and well-being, Umeit Secondary School in Ri Bhoi observed an awareness programme about quality living and the importance of health. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Our Planet, Our Health”.
The celebration fulfilled its objective of developing a deep understanding of the essential link between the individual and collective health for a sustainable life. The school adapted the ‘School Nursery Yojana’, which is an initiative to bring students closer to nature. The Yojana seeks to engage classes of VI to IX in raising saplings for school nurseries.
As part of the celebration, the school has pledged to plant 1000 tree saplings in the school campus for a sustainable future and to make the school clean and green. Tree saplings and seed packets were distributed amongst the students.
“We have a high hope that in the next few years, we can get organic vegetables from our own garden, and I want to encourage others also to practice this ‘Kitchen Garden’ in their home,’’ said a faculty member of the school.
The celebration was attended by D. Kharbani, the Principal of Umeit Secondary School, office bearers of the school managing committee along with students, parents and others present.
