Tura, March 3: The Civil Hospital in Tura observed World Hearing Day 2025 on Monday with the theme “Changing mindsets: Empower yourself to make ear and hearing care a reality for all” with a special awareness program aimed at promoting hearing health and the importance of early detection and prevention of hearing loss.

The event, chaired by Dr. Cynthia Marak, Grade 1 Specialist (Diabetologist), brought together healthcare experts and officials to discuss key measures in tackling hearing-related issues across different age groups.

During the programme, Dr. Sabhir Hussain, ENT Specialist, highlighted the significance of early detection and prevention of hearing loss. He emphasised that timely screenings and interventions could help reduce long-term complications and improve overall hearing health. Dr. Tengsilchi N. Marak, Senior Medical and Health Officer, Tura Civil Hospital, further elaborated on the importance of raising awareness about hearing loss among all age groups. She also informed attendees about the availability of hearing aids in hospitals for those in need.

Adding to the discussion, Shaka Moikimshang, Audiologist, explained the various types of hearing tests conducted at Tura Civil Hospital (TCH) to diagnose and address hearing impairments effectively. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Shyam Diengdoh.

In alignment with this goal, District Medical and Health Officers (DMHOs) across all districts in Meghalaya conducted targeted awareness programs. Activities included hearing screening camps at schools, early childhood centers, and healthcare facilities for young children. Adolescents participated in awareness sessions on safe listening practices and hearing health checks, while adults benefited from screenings at workplaces, community centers, and hospitals. Occupational hearing hazards and the benefits of assistive hearing devices were also highlighted.

The government has allocated ₹50,000 per district to fund these activities, with expenditures managed under FMR 121. Each district has been directed to document activities through photographs and reports, which will be submitted to the District Nodal Officer, National Programme for Prevention and Control of Deafness (NPPCD).
