Shillong, Aug 22: The athletes from the Muay Thai Association of Meghalaya (MTAM) who recently took part in the Muay Thai World Championship at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia held from August 9 – 21, 2022 brought laurels to the state and the country as a whole.
Speaking to the press here on Monday, Angelus Sun, president of the Muay Thai Association of Meghalaya said that the participants have really given their best to bring laurels to the state and the country as a whole. He thanked the parents, the students and also the RBF for welcoming the athletes on their way back, which is a sign of love and encouragement for the athletes.
“To be selected to represent the country is a big achievement for our Meghalaya’s athletes,” he said.
There are 5 athletes from the state who have been able to represent India in this World Championship, they are Mary Christine Wriang who competed under the 14-15 years of 38 kgs against Philippines and secured a silver medal in this category and also a bronze medal at the Waikru stage, Alphonsa Wriang who fought against the IFMA category 1 under 14-15 years of 38 kgs and secured a bronze medal at the Waikru stage. Bansahnamkyrpang Warkhyllew who fought against Belguim under the 14-15 year, 45 kg, Eberest Lyngdoh against Thailand 14 -15 years, 48 kg and Naphilawanbet Nongspung against Uzbekistan, under 14-15 years, 45 kgs.
Acknowledging the talent of these young athletes, Sun said the association needs support from the government. “If the government and the sports department can give us good infrastructure then we can also train them better,” he said.
The good performance of these athletes from the whole country will also open an opportunity for them to participate in the Muay Thai International Championship in the year 2028 which will be held in the United States of America and, hopefully, these athletes from Meghalaya will be able to showcase their talent at the International platform if proper infrastructure is provided to them, further added the President.
