Guwahati, Aug 9: Despite the installation of an interim government in Bangladesh, the situation remains volatile in the country, with a growing humanitarian crisis. The minority communities are feeling vulnerable as more of them try to enter India to seek refuse. On Friday morning, as many as 1,000 Bangladesh nationals approached the Border Security Force (BSF) seeking refuge in India at the India-Bangladesh international border in Coochbehar district of West Bengal.
However, these Bangladeshi nationals, believed to be Hindus, were pushed back by the troops of BSF with the help of Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB).
“Upon encountering this group, the BSF promptly approached its counterpart, the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB), to take these Bangladeshi nationals back, ensuring that the situation was managed without escalating tensions,” an official of BSF Guwahati Frontier said.
The official said this emerging challenge is new to the BSF, which is primarily entrusted with the security of India’s borders along both Bangladesh and Pakistan. Faced with the delicate task of managing humanitarian concerns while ensuring border security, the BSF officers and men swiftly responding to the situation.
“The quick and decisive actions of the BSF, in coordination with India’s civil administration, were crucial in maintaining order and resolving the issue,” he said.
VHP seeks for safety of Hindus in Bangladesh
Meanwhile, Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) Uttar Purba Prant’s secretary Brajajyoti Sarma urged the Union government and the world community to ensure the safety of Hindus in Bangladesh in view of the volatile situation prevailing there.
Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Friday, Sarma pointed out that Bangladesh is facing violence and anarchy. “After the elected Prime Minister resigned and left the country, anarchist elements have taken over and there is no law and order there. The Hindu residents of Bangladesh are being subjected to large-scale harassment by the extremists amid the chaos,” Sarma said.
Sarma also said places of worship, business establishments and houses of the Hindus are being damaged in Bangladesh.
“Such incidents are being reported from all districts of Bangladesh. Temples have been damaged heavily. Even the cremation grounds have not been spared,” he claimed.
The VHP leader maintained that the population of the Hindus in Bangladesh has come down from 32 per cent to 8 per cent. “India certainly cannot turn a blind eye to this situation. India has helped oppressed refugees from all over the world. The VHP urges the Government of India to take effective steps to ensure the safety of the minorities in Bangladesh,” he said.
Sarma maintained that a democratic and secular government should be re-established in Bangladesh as soon as possible and the provision of human rights to the minority community should be ensured.
