Tura, Sept 20: The 1st West Garo Hills Inter Club Taekwondo Championship (Kyorugi) began with high energy at the Indoor Sports Hall in Tura on Friday.
Organized by the West Garo Hills Taekwondo Association (WGHTA) in collaboration with the District Sports Office, the two-day event is set to feature 165 young participants from across 12 clubs in the West Garo Hills District.
The competing clubs include Indoor Sports Hall Club, Casarina Public School (Tura), St. John Secondary School (Chibragre), Rongram Taekwondo Club, Sewa Inland Mission School (Rongram), Police Public School (Tura), Don Bosco Higher Secondary School Taekwondo Club (Rongkhon), Don Bosco School Taekwondo Academy, St. Xavier’s Higher Secondary School Taekwondo Club, and Tura Amateur Taekwondo Club (Mother’s Union).
The competition is divided into four categories—Sub Junior, Cadet, Junior, and Senior—across both boys’ and girls’ divisions.
The first day saw intense matches in the Sub Junior and Cadet divisions, where young athletes demonstrated their skills in Kyorugi, a form of free combat sparring.
The primary objective of the championship is to enhance the skills of these budding athletes and provide them with valuable tournament experience. Winners of the event will earn a spot in the upcoming state selections, representing the district at the state championships.
Kyorugi is a practical application of Taekwondo techniques learned in Poomsae, where participants engage in controlled combat, putting their training into actual fight (in this case a competitive setting).
