2 kidnappers killed in encounter with police in Garo Hills

TURA, Nov 10: Two kidnappers have been shot dead in Tikrikilla following an encounter with West Garo Hills police early on Thursday morning.

The criminal gang hailing from outside the state tried to jeopardise peace in Meghalaya by kidnapping two persons and keeping them hidden in a jungle area of Dibru Hill Reserve Forest under Tikrikilla police station.

A police hunt led to the site and the gang opened fire on seeing the police.

In the encounter two unidentified kidnappers were shot dead in the retaliatory fire.

“Reference Tikrikilla PS Case No. 24(11) 22 u/s 364A/506 IPC in which one Bikas Chetia of Guwahati, Assam who is a taxi driver by profession was allegedly abducted on 04.11.2022 from Tikrikilla. Subsequently, on 09.11.2022, Goalpara Police informed that one child has also been kidnapped and kept in WGH. In this regard, a case vide Lakhipur PS Case No. 418/22 u/s 365/387/34 IPC was registered. Accordingly, investigation was conducted and it was found that both the persons have been abducted by same gang of criminals from Meghalaya as well as Assam. Subsequently, based on findings of investigation, a counter-insurgency operation was launched on 09.11.2022,” informed Vivekanand Singh Rathore, Superintendent of Police (SP), West Garo Hills, in a press statement.

He said the ops team led by SP(T) and consisting of Addl SP(T), SDPO(D), SDPO(R), CI(S), OC Phulbari, and other officers and subordinate ranks spotted the gang as well as the victims at a place in Dibru Hills Forest Reserve near Bamandanga/Gaptuli. However, the armed miscreants also saw the Police team. They immediately fired at the Police team which also retaliated in self defence. The exchange of fire continued for approximately 2-3 minutes.

“Once the exchange of fire stopped, the place of occurrence was cordoned and thoroughly searched during which two unidentified dead bodies were recovered,” he said adding that the two abducted persons were also rescued.

From the site of operation, police recovered 1 AK series rifle, one Pistol , one camouflage bag with 23 number of 7.62 mm and 09 number of 9 mm ammunition along with other incriminating materials. They also recovered 19 empty 9 mm and 14 empty 7.62 mm cartridge.
