22 colleges in Meghalaya lose State University affiliation due to conflict with NEHU rules

Must read

Shillong, May 13: Captain Williamson Sangma State University has revoked its affiliation with 22 colleges in Meghalaya, citing technical issues stemming from conflicts with existing rules under North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU).

Captain Williamson Sangma State University’s Registrar, Ambrose Ch Marak, has issued formal notifications to the affected college principals, stating that the university’s initial approval granted on April 15 for the academic session 2025–26 has been withdrawn with immediate effect.

A government source confirmed that the decision was prompted by the fact that these institutions remain affiliated with NEHU, a central university. As per NEHU’s regulations, dual affiliations are not permitted under its university statute.

In his notice, Marak mentioned that the process for de-affiliation with NEHU would be communicated to the colleges separately.

NEHU clarified that its governing Act strictly prohibits colleges from having affiliations to two universities at the same time.
