Tura, Oct 3: In a series of operations to curb illegal border crossings, atleast 22 illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators have been apprehend in West Garo Hills in 2 days.
On Thursday morning, Meghalaya Police apprehended 17 Bangladeshi nationals from Sobribari, near Hallidayganj in West Garo Hills. The arrested individuals, all hailing from the Rajshahi district of Bangladesh, were identified as Sorif Ray, Mizanur Sheikh, Habib Sheikh, Chayan Ray, Sabbir Sheikh, Sohidul Islam, Nahid Sheikh, Sipon Sheikh, Maruf Sheikh, Amin Sheikh, Rojob Ali, Kabir Sheikh, Md Rabiul Islam, Alamgir Sheikh, Sabana Sheikh, and Parul Sheikh.
The apprehended individuals have been taken into custody for further questioning.
In a separate operation conducted by the Border Security Force (BSF) on Wednesday, five more Bangladeshi nationals were apprehended while attempting to cross the border illegally.
BSF troops stationed near Dalu in West Garo Hills, observed suspicious activity when an auto-rickshaw, carrying five individuals, halted a short distance from their patrol area. Upon attempting to flee, the individuals were chased down and arrested by vigilant BSF personnel.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the five Bangladeshis had been working in a garment factory in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and were attempting to illegally return to Bangladesh.
Their plan was thwarted when the BSF intercepted them en route to the border at Purakhasia.
The arrested individuals were later handed over to Dalu Police Station for further legal proceedings.
