12 year old Mawryngkneng boy awarded the Jeevan Raksha Padak Award

Shillong, Nov 6: Everbloom K Nongrum, a 12 years old boy from Mawryngkneng Village, East Khasi Hills District was presented the ‘Jeevan Raksha Padak Award 2019’ by the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District, Shillong on November 4.

​​The President of India through the Ministry of Home Affairs awarded the Jeevan Raksha Award to persons exhibiting meritorious acts of humane nature in saving the lives in cases like drowning in water, accidents, fire incidents, electrocution, natural calamities, rescue operation in mines, etc.

The award comprising of a medallion, a small-size replica of the main medal, a certificate signed by the Union Home Minister and a cheque of Rs.1,00, 000/-(One Lakh Rupees) was handed over to the brave young boy who had displayed remarkable courage and presence of mind in saving the lives of not one, but two of his friends.

It was on July 17 last year when one Davin Sohtun age 9 years, a class 3 student, fell in a hole which was left uncovered for nearly six months without proper fencing, the hole was filled with rainwater at a construction site in Mawryngkneng. David fell into the hole measuring a depth of 3 meters and width of 4×4 meter and his friends who were there screamed for help. Heroically, Everbloom K. Nongrum rushed and jumped into the hole to saves David’s life by pulling his hair and saved him from drowning. Unfortunately, a similar incident happened on July 23 last year, another boy, Wanphai Rani age 8 years old, slipped and fell in the same hole while playing with his friend. Everbloom K Nongrum, who was there with him jumped into the hole and brought him out to save the life of his friend.

Following these two incidents, the holes located at the construction site were immediately covered up by the concerned authority to prevent any eventuality.

The parents of Everbloom, Kong Banrikerlin Nongrum along with the Sordar of Mawryngkneng attended the Award felicitation.

The Deputy Commissioner thanked Everbloom K Nongrum for his incredible act of bravery at such a young age and wished he continues to be a beacon of hope and promise to others around him.
