Some of the victims were local residents, while others were travellers from other states. In one case, the identity of the victim could not even be confirmed yet.

According to the Ri-Bhoi Police in their Facebook post stated that the increase in road mishaps is largely attributed to reckless driving behaviour excessive speeding beyond legal limits, driving under the influence of alcohol, illegal and ill-timed parking particularly near sharp curves and the operation of overloaded vehicles that compromise road safety.

Last week, Police personnel from the Nongpoh Police Traffic Branch carried out a late-night traffic checking drive along National Highway 06, targeting drivers violating traffic rules under the Motor Vehicle Act. Within just a few hours, police collected nearly Rs 2.99 lakh in fines from violators.
