Shillong, Aug 15: The All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association (AMKA) will host its annual karate championship for school children and college students from August 17 to 19, 2023, here.
The 29th Inter School and 11th Inter College Karate Tournament 2023 will be held at the Multipurpose Hall at the Sport Authority of India’s Shillong Training Centre in the NEHU campus.
It will begin at 11am on August 17, with the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Shakliar Warjri, as the Chief Guest and the Working President of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association, John F Kharshiing, as the Guest of Honour.
Around 500 karatekas from 70 schools and six colleges are expected to take part in the three-day event, an increase on the 300 karatekas who participated last year.
2022’s champions were OM Roy Memorial Secondary School (inter school, girls), St Anthony’s LP School (inter school, boys) and Shillong College (college category).
The annual event gives space to the young karatekas of the state to demonstrate their ability in kumite (sparring) and kata (form demonstration) events and many martial artists have progressed from this tournament to national and international competitions where they have represented and won laurels for Meghalaya and the country.
