3.4 lakh people affected in first wave of Assam flood, 8 reported dead

Guwahati, June 1: The first wave of flood in Assam have claimed lives of eight people and displaced over 3.4 lakh people across the 11 districts.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) confirmed six additional fatalities on Friday, raising concerns as the state braces for potential flooding.

To mitigate the crisis, the state government has launched a multi-pronged response. As many as 148 relief camps and 39 distribution centres were set up to provide essential supplies to the displaced population.

Cachar district in Assam was the worst affected with nearly 1.2 lakh people were displaced due to the flood. Other severely impacted areas include Nagaon and Hojai, where tens of thousands are struggling to cope with rising waters.

Nearly 28, 000 people, including vulnerable groups like pregnant women and children, are currently receiving shelter in these camps.

Over 10 lakh domestic animals have been impacted, and hundreds of houses have been destroyed or rendered homeless.

Road connectivity in several districts has been severed due to submerged highways and local roads, hindering movement of essential supplies and emergency services.

Rescue teams evacuated 615 people. Swirling flood waters also damaged 11 roads and breached three embankments while urban flooding was reported from Kamrup, Cachar and Jorhat.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured the state of the Centre’s help to deal with the situation while Union Home Minister Amit Shah has called up CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.
