Shillong, Oct 28: Police have arrested four persons in connection with the clash between National People’s Party (NPP) and Congress supporters at Garodoubi village under Rajabala constituency on Wednesday evening.
The clash took place soon after the end of campaigning for the bye-elections to three Assembly seats – Rajabala, Mawphlang and Mawryngkneng, slated for October 30 polling.
The clash is said to have occurred after the supporters of respective parties were returning from the election campaigns. However, there hasn’t been clarity on the reason for the clash.
Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) FR Kharkongor stated that the clash was unprovoked but brought under control quickly. He also informed that there have been no fresh cases of violence and the DC and RO (Returning Officer) have been asked to keep strict vigil as well as patrol the area.
He added that he’s taking stock of the situation and overall security and preparedness regularly.
According to West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh, a case has been registered and more arrests are expected. Section 144 has also been imposed in the area.
Additional security for bye-elections
Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) FR Kharkongor further informed that they have identified 29 polling stations in Rajabala, about 8 in Mawryngkneng and 10 in Mawphlang as vulnerable.
For manning these polling stations, 4 companies of CAPF have been received from the Centre.
“Apart from the CAPF there will be deployment of state police and home guard and in those areas where they can’t send CAPF, web casting will be done,” added Kharkongor.
