Tura, August 31: The stands were packed with football enthusiasts from across Tura as two pre-quarterfinal matches of the 4th Inter Mahari Men’s Football Tournament were played on Saturday at the Chandmari Football Turf in Tura.
The first match was played between Rongmuthu Mahari against Te’gite Mahari – while the second match saw Agitok Mahari take on Chambugong Mahari.
In the opening match, Te’gite Mahari secured a 2-0 victory over Rongmuthu Mahari.
The game began with both teams launching hasty attacks, but it was Te’gite Mahari who broke the deadlock in the 12th minute with a goal by Martus T Sangma. The first half ended with Te’gite Mahari holding a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, Bonsrang T Sangma extended their lead in the 54th minute, with just the two goals, it was enough for Te’gite Mahari to booked their spot in the last 8.
Throughout the match, Te’gite Mahari maintained solid ball possession, while Rongmuthu Mahari struggled with passing and also missed several opportunities.
The second match of the day delivered an exciting contest between Chambugong Mahari and Agitok Mahari- the two of the largest Mahari clans in Garo Hills.
The stands were jam-packed with fans from both clans, with many spectators even climbing the rooftops just to witness this most anticipated match.
The match began with Agitok Mahari launching a series of aggressive attacks, but Chambugong Mahari soon found their rhythm and responded strongly. Despite a series of back-and-forth attacks and numerous corner kicks, neither team managed to score during regular time ending the game at 0-0 in regular time.
The match moved on to a penalty shootout. Chambugong Mahari players missed three from the 12-yard mark, while Agitok Mahari converted three, winning the game 3-1 on penalties.
Trenith Ch Sangma received the only yellow card of the match in the 24th minute for a foul.
In a special moment, the two Subroto International Cup 2024 champions- Thrisilbirth A Sangma and Mark R Marak, received a hero’s welcome and a standing ovation from the hundreds of fans in attendance. The District Football Association (DFA) honored them for their outstanding performance in the recent tournament held in Bengaluru.
Meanwhile, only one match is scheduled for Monday at the Chandmari Football Turf in the women’s division, between Rangsa Mahari and Cheran Mahari.
