Guwahati, Jan 28: A 56-year-old man, identified as Vikram Lohar, was killed in a rhino attack near Hatikhuli Haldibari in Kaziranga on Monday.
According to reports, the incident occurred on NH 37 after the rhino wandered out of the forest. Lohar, who was on his routine morning walk, sustained critical injuries during the encounter.
He was immediately rushed to the Shaheed Kamal Miri Sub-Divisional Civil Hospital in Bokakhat for treatment. Despite doctors’ efforts, Lohar succumbed to his injuries.
Speaking on the incident, a forest official said, “The rhino had strayed from its habitat, leading to this unfortunate event.”
Locals have urged authorities to strengthen measures to prevent such encounters. “Rhino straying into human-inhabited areas near Kaziranga National Park is not new. The forest department should take steps to curb such incidents,” said a concerned villager.
