Tura, Sept 18: It was a busy week for the students of Tura as the highly energetic and competitive 5th Buccieri Memorial Inter-School Basketball Tournament kept them busy over the course of 7 days. The tournament ensured the entire town was soaked in the palpable energy and loud cheers of the teams.
Organized by Don Bosco Higher Secondary School (DBHSS), Tura, in collaboration with the District Basketball Association at the school premises, the week-long event ran from September 10 to 17 and brought together 26 teams from seven different schools, competing in both boys’ and girls’ categories for Under-14 and Above-14 age groups.
The tournament is held annually in memory of the late Rev. Fr. Anthony Buccieri, SDB, a Salesian missionary who dedicated many years to working in the Garo Hills. The sporting event was started to honour Buccieri’s vision of curating a child’s overall development and also aims at providing opportunities to the young budding talents.
A total of four final matches were played on Tuesday, two in each age category. In the Under-14 Boys category, Bosco Mount from Rongkhon narrowly defeated DBHSS, Tura, with a 32-30 win. The Under-14 Girls final saw St. Xavier’s Higher Secondary School secure a close 6-4 victory against Christian Girls Higher Secondary School (CGHSS).
The Above-14 Girls final witnessed DBHSS claim a commanding 19-9 win over CGHSS. Meanwhile, the Above-14 Boys category featured a thrilling match between two teams from DBHSS, with the Day Shift team edging out the Night Shift team 25-23.
Principals from prominent educational institutions in Tura attended the event to distribute trophies to the winning teams and runners-up. The dignitaries present included Fr. Threnius N. Sangma, Principal of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Tura, Fr. Januarius Sangma, Principal of Don Bosco College, Tura, Sister Maria D’Silva, Principal of St. Xavier’s Higher Secondary School, Tura, Anna Zelda Ch. Momin, Principal of Christian Girls Higher Secondary School, Tura, and Fr. Benjamin Daimari, Director of Bosco Mount, Rongkhon.
Adding a touch of melody to the sporting spirit, the grand finale featured musical and dance performances by students of DBHSS, Tura.

Above-14 Boys: James Tirkey (DBHSS)
Above-14 Girls: Silkimchi S. Sangma (DBHSS)
Under-14 Boys: Ranggam A. Marak (Bosco Mount, Rongkhon)
Under-14 Girls: Salosa A. Sangma (St. Xavier’s Higher Secondary School)
