5th Meghalaya Games | East Khasi Hills rules Boxing arena with 9 Gold medals

Tura, Jan 19: The Boxing events of the 5th Meghalaya Games concluded on Friday with the East Khasi Hills winning 30 medals, including 9 gold, 9 silver and 12 bronze medals.

The boxing events were held at Don Bosco School, Tura from January 16 to 19, 2024.

They were followed by West Jaintia Hills with 3 gold medals, 2 silver and 1 bronze. Ri Bhoi followed close behind with 2 gold medals, 1 silver and 3 bronze. At the fourth spot was West Garo Hills with 1 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze medals.

The men’s section had 9 weight categories: 48 kg, 51 kg, 54 kg, 57 kg, 60 kg, 63.5 kg, 67 kg, 71 kg, and 75 kg. the women’s section had 6 weight categories: 48 kg, 50 kg, 52 kg, 54 kg, 57 kg, and 60 kg.

In women’s category, East Khasi Hills won 4 gold of the 6 on offer, with the other 2 gold medals going to Ri Bhoi. Sonia Gurung (48 kg), Shreena Thapa (50 kg), Eva Waynie Marbaniang (52 kg), and Reetika Sarkri (57 kg) won gold for East Khasi Hills. For Ri Bhoi, the two gold medals were clinched by Banisha Makri (54 kg) and Rishisha Jana (60 kg).

In Men’s category, East Khasi Hills won 5 gold while West Jaintia Hills took home 3 gold and West Garo Hills clinched the remaining one gold on offer. For East Khasi Hills, Sanjeev Maskut (48 kg), Khrawbok Marwein (51 kg), Banjop Nongkhlaw (54 kg), Sunil Limbu (57 kg), and Mankhrawkupar Khartiewlyngksiar (75 kg) won the gold medals.

For West Jaintia Hills, Ram Lyngdoh (60 kg), Badonkupar Synnah (63.5 kg), and Bhalang Shadap (67 kg) won the gold.

For Garo Hills, Balnas Sangma won the gold in 71 kg bout. He defeated Sahil Sharma of East Khasi Hills to claim the gold.
