Tura, Sept 05: The Department of Education, West Garo Hills, marked the 62nd Teachers’ Day with enthusiasm at the District Auditorium in Tura.
In his address, West Garo Hills DC Jagdish Chelani, present as the Chief Guest, recounted the influence of his teachers on him during his school days. He acknowledged that while progress has been made in education, there is still much work to be done. Chelani extended his gratitude to the teachers for their invaluable contributions to society and the students’ lives.
He urged parents to create a supportive atmosphere for their children, emphasizing the importance of their role in helping students reach their full potential. Chelani also shared a personal anecdote about his mathematics teacher, who sparked his interest in the subject.
He also announced the upcoming launch of coaching classes for competitive exams, which will help to further enhance educational opportunities.
Meanwhile, Guest of Honour Dr. Viola Sonatchi B Sangma, Adviser at ICFAI University, Tura, emphasized the multifaceted role teachers play in shaping the lives of students. She highlighted that teachers not only impart knowledge but also act as mentors and molders of character. Education, she noted, is the foundation upon which nations are built, and in the digital age, it has evolved beyond textbooks to encompass digitization and audiovisual learning.
Dr. Sangma expressed concern about the challenges posed by distractions such as smartphones and games, urging youngsters to overcome lethargy and casual approaches to education.
She shared her joy in meeting former students who fondly remember her, emphasizing that such moments are the true rewards of being a teacher. Quoting Robert Frost, she concluded her speech with, “Miles to go before I sleep”.
An important part of the event was the presentation of awards to outstanding teachers from the district. The District Awardees are:
1. Subrata Sen from Donbosco School HSS Tura
2. Purida Sangma, Headmistress of Chitoktak Upper Primary School, Tura
3. Satal A Sangma, a teacher at Masumata Govt. L.P School
4. Ningban R. Marak, Scouts Master of Garo Union HSS, Tura
5. Sarikha A. Sangma, Guide’s Captain at Little Flower SS, Tura
The event witnessed the presence of numerous schoolchildren and teachers, fostering an interactive atmosphere. An engaging session featured teachers drawing random tasks from pieces of paper, showcasing their talents through singing, mimicry, and recitations from movies.
