Shillong, May 6: Police in East Jaintia Hills on Monday arrested two suspected drug traffickers, including a 65-year-old woman and seized a large quantity of drugs from their possession.

The arrests were made after police intercepted a Maruti Eco van bearing registration number ML05-AE-4423 on National Highway-06 near Sunapur village, acting on credible intelligence.

Upon searching the vehicle, police recovered 14 soap boxes filled with suspected drugs. Of these, six boxes were found concealed on the body of the elderly woman, identified as Gouri Das (65), while eight boxes were hidden inside the vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle, Safiqul Alom (40), a resident of Silchar, Assam, was also taken into custody. Both individuals are currently being interrogated as part of a detailed investigation.

In addition to the drugs, police also seized cash amounting to ₹26,450 from the duo. Further legal proceedings are underway.
