73rd Council Day of GHADC: Prestone calls for preservation of council’s true history and legacy

Tura, April 14: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Monday underscored the need to remember the true history of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) and ensure that the future generations understand its importance.

Speaking at the 73rd Council Day celebration of GHADC at the District Auditorium in Tura – which was celebrated with great zeal, Tynsong, who is also holds the portfolio of the District Council Affairs department, acknowledged historical figures like Captain Williamson Sangma and other leaders who contributed to the state’s development, including the achievement of full statehood in 1972.

He emphasized the importance of remembering the true history of the council and the state and saluted the founding figures of GHADC, especially Capt. Williamson A. Sangma the first CEM of GHADC when it was established on 14th April, 1952 when the region was part of undivided Assam. Later, Capt. Williamson A. Sangma went on to become the first Chief Minister of Meghalaya in 1972.

He further discussed the significance of the District Council and the need for future generations to understand its importance, mentioning the region’s pre-statehood status under Assam.

Tynsong also called for a review of the council’s functions and responsibilities, suggesting a collaborative approach to address any conflicting issues. The discussion included the need for technical expertise to ensure compliance and revenue generation.

Stressing the importance of the Sixth Schedule and land ownership, noting that 96-98% of land in Meghalaya falls under this category, he highlighted the historical significance of the Sixth Schedule and its role in sustaining communities from generation to generation. He also outlined plans for further strengthening the Sixth Schedule and the council’s authority, emphasizing their importance for the future of Meghalaya.

Albinush R. Marak, Chief Executive Member (CEM) of GHADC, gave an overview of the council’s annual achievements and revenue generation from various departments in his speech, emphasizing the importance of the council in preserving age-old customs and traditions while promoting peace and harmony.

The celebratory event also witnessed various musical and cultural dance performance by Tura Town Higher Secondary School, Tura; Tura Music Academy; Dokaku Art and Cultural Association; and St. Xavier’s Higher Secondary School, Tura.
