Tura, Oct 12: A football match in Adokgre in North Garo Hills on Wednesday turned into a health crisis when around 86 individuals fell ill after consuming the hugely popular road-side snack ‘chana mix’.
The snack was prepared and sold by food vendors outside the stadium during the match. Unaware of what was to befall upon them, many ate the snack to get through the 1.5 hour of the match. Very soon though, many started complaining of severe stomach pain, vomiting, and nausea.
The affected individuals were quickly rushed to the Adokgre Public Health Centre. While majority of the victims were treated at the PHC, those with serious symptoms were referred to hospitals in Goalpara, Dudhnoi, and Boko.
As of Saturday (October 12), six patients who had been referred to these out-of-state hospitals have been declared out of danger.
Speaking to Hub News, North Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhinav Kumar Singh informed that the district administration has seized the items used to make the chana mix and sent the samples to Shillong for testing.
“Once the results are out, further actions will be taken,” he added.
