Tura, Aug 16: It was a special Independence Day for the people of Tura, as the highly anticipated film ‘Rapture’ threw the audience into a state of euphoria during its maiden screening at Tura Auditorium on Thursday.
The event, marked by full houses and sold-out shows, saw long lines of eager attendees stretching outside the venue, making the film’s homecoming a celebration of both cinema and cultural pride.
Directed by Dominic Sangma and produced by local talent Eva Gunme Marak, Rapture resonated deeply with the Garo community, creating a shared experience of cultural pride and collective memory. Having garnered international acclaim on the festival circuit, its homecoming in Tura was particularly special, with the warm reception serving as a testament to the film’s impact.
The 127 minute Garo-language film, revolves around a 10-year-old boy who suffers from night blindness and for whom every night is terrifying when his village is gripped by the fear of child-kidnappers. The film has been produced by Anna Films Shillong. Rapture delves into the deep cultural and spiritual realms of the Garo community. It made its debut in March this year across 100 theatres in France.
After the screening, the director, cast, and crew participated in an interactive session, sharing insights into the making of the film and discussing its themes. This personal interaction added a layer of intimacy to the event, strengthening the bond between the film and its viewers.
Eva Gunme Marak, the local producer, expressed her gratitude to the Garo community for their unwavering support. She described the screening as a dream fulfilled and emphasized the film’s cultural significance. Director Dominic Sangma echoed her sentiments, saying, “The response we received today in Tura is beyond anything we could have imagined. Rapture is a story close to our hearts, and to see it embraced by the Garo community, our home, is truly humbling.”
The event was made possible through the collaboration of the Department of Art and Culture and the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), Government of Meghalaya. The Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills, Tura, along with other government bodies, played a crucial role in supporting the screening.
As Rapture continues to enthrall audiences both locally and internationally, its screening in Tura marks a significant milestone in its journey. The film’s success is a source of pride for Meghalaya, showcasing the immense talent and creativity emerging from the region.
