Guwahati, April 13: As Bihu fervor grips Assam All Guwahati Students Union organized Mukoli Bihu Utsav at Judge Field on the occasion of Rongali Bihu on Saturday.
The celebration was marked with the hoisting of the Bihu flag by lyricist and music director, Prashant Bordoloi in the presence of AASU President Utpal Sharma and AASU General Secretary Shankar Jyoti Barua. The members paid tribute to the martyrs.
The students’ body felicitated remarkable achievements of personalities from Assam community. Padmashree awardees Parbati Barua, Drona Bhuyan, Sarbeswar Basumatary, Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee Dulal Roy and others were honored for their outstanding contributions in various fields by Dr. Samujjal Bhattacharya, Chief Advisor of AASU on the occasion.
The Mukoli Bihu program organized witnessed “Gumrag Dance” a cultural performances by 100 Mishing community, 100 Garo youths presented “Wangala Dance”. Adding to the festive spirit, the program was tuned with melodious tunes of several Bihu Husori Dols.
Bohag Bihu, is the beginning of the Assamese New Year and falls in mid-April. The festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm and to encourage the traditional culture of Assam.
A traditional aboriginal ethnic festival celebrated in Assam, Bohag Bihu is also known as Rongali Bihu and is the most popular festival in Assam.
It is celebrated each year with loads of fun and abundance. Of the three Bihu Festivals held in Assam, namely Bohag Bihu or Rongali Bihu, Kati Bihu or Kongali Bihu, and Magh Bihu or Bhogali Bihu, the Rongali Bihu festival is celebrated in spring.
