Guwahati, Sept 12: Shankar Jyoti Baruah has resigned as the General Secretary of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) amid controversy surrounding his personal life and allegations of sexual harassment. Baruah announced his resignation via Facebook on Thursday, citing a recent dispute involving his relationship with a law student as the catalyst for his decision.
In his resignation post, Baruah addressed the controversy, stating, “I want to personally inform you that I am stepping down from my position as General Secretary of the All Assam Students’ Union. Though the truth will be established in court, I am voluntarily resigning from this position. I will soon send my formal resignation letter to the central committee. I appreciate the support and cooperation I have received during my tenure. Thank you.”
The resignation comes in response to allegations of mental and sexual harassment filed by a law student at Bhangagarh Police Station on September 6. The case has since been transferred to Dispur Police Station. Baruah was granted anticipatory bail on September 7 and faces charges under several sections rape, voluntarily causing hurt, and criminal intimidation. The complaint accuses Baruah of engaging in a physical relationship under false pretence of marriage.
However, Baruah has confessed to having a relationship with the student in the past, but said it ended six months ago.
The accusation has sparked massive discussions, and the central leadership of AASU has taken note of the issue, asking Baruah to step down on his own. On Tuesday, AASU chief advisor Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya had announced that Baruah had been advised to either take leave or step down from his position as general secretary in light of the allegations.
During his tenure, the organization had previously enforced strict actions against members embroiled in similar controversies. Notably, Anowar Hussain, President of the All Guwahati District Students’ Union (AAGSU), was forced to resign over allegations of a relationship, and General Secretary Tutmoni Choudhury was asked to step down following his marriage registration application.
