AASU, KSU urge Meghalaya govt to break deadlock

Must read

GUWAHATI, July 27: Expressing concern over the recent ban on tourist taxis from Assam entering Meghalaya, the All Assam Students Union (AASU) and the Khasi Students Union (KSU) have urged the governments of both states to resolve the issue through dialogue.

“Tourist and tourist vehicles ferrying tourists from Assam should come to Meghalaya without any worry or agony. However, it is pertinent for both the governments of Assam and Meghalaya to have a thorough dialogue on the issue and solve the same permanently,” AASU president Utpal Sarma, general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah and KSU president Lambokstarwell Marngar, general secretary Donald Thabah said in a joint statement here on Saturday.

“Similar tourist taxi associations from both states are requested to maintain cordial relationships and a spirit of common understanding. The KSU will take positive initiative in this regard,” they added,” they said.

Both the student organisations said Assam and Meghalaya are two neighbouring states. It has been a constant endeavour of the AASU and the KSU to strengthen friendly relations among the people of Assam and Meghalaya as both states are being plagued with the same problem of infiltration if illegal foreigners.

“AASU and KSU have always supported each other in their quest for survival and protection of indigenous Assamese and Khasis since time immemorial in both states. We are committed to continue this affirmative effort,” they also said.

“Both AASU and KSU are perturbed to witness that tourists carrying vehicles from Assam, both of private and commercial registration, are being stopped at several places in Meghalaya and denied entry to the state. Under th aegis of the North East Students Organization (NESO), the AASU and the KSU have discussed the issue with utter seriousness. While discussing the same, the KSU stated that the organization is not aware of any such incident of stopping vehicle from Assam and firmly does not conform to any such initiative,” they added.
