TURA, Aug 19: A man accused of sexually assaulting one minor girl and rape of another has reportedly killed himself inside Williamnagar police station lock up on Friday night after he was taken into custody a day earlier.
The 50-year-old man who killed himself was a self-styled medicine man in the village and had used his claims of expertise in local herbs to see patients and target children who came to him for medical help.
The accused identified as Jitman Sangma of Rongsak village under Chiading police station was arrested on August 17 after the family of a minor girl lodged a complaint accusing him of sexual assault.
The accused claimed to be a self-styled “Oja” and took advantage of his practise to sexually assaulted minor girls.
His modus operandi was to ask the family of the victim to leave him and the patient alone in the room on the pretext of rubbing traditional herbs and ointments on the body. He would then target the victim.
One family whose daughter was a victim of the “sexual Oja” reported the matter to police and he was taken into custody on Thursday and lodged inside Williamnagar police station lock up, pending an investigation.
On Friday, another minor victim of the medicine man came forward to police to file a second complaint in which she accused him of rape.
“He was inside the lock up and at around 9:30 PM the sentry on duty went to check on him and found him hanging,” said SP Siddarth Ambedkar.
The accused reportedly used his vest as a rope and hanged himself from the lock up ventilator. An investigation has begun into the incident.
