Tura, July 25: The A’chik Conscious Holistically Integrated Krima (ACHIK) group has written to the chief minister complaining against the installation of a check gate by the district transport officer of South Garo Hills and the alleged “fee” collection from commuters.
The group is seeking action against the transport office and its head and calling for a probe.
Multiple complaints have been received from the general public regarding the illegal installation of a check gate and extortion of money from vehicle owners, alleges ACHIK vice president Greneth M Sangma in the letter.
The organization has also complained about the undue delay in granting of driving licenses for new riders and vehicle registration certificates stating that applicants are made to wait for many months just to obtain the two crucial documents.
In the light of the delay in obtaining the two documents, commuters are at the receiving end of the frequent checks undertaken by the Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI) as well as the police in and around Baghmara town.
