Tura, July 14: The A’chik Conscious Holistically Integrated Krima (ACHIK) commenced an indefinite hunger strike in front of the mini-Secretariat in Tura on Friday. The strike comes in response to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s statement on the roster system.
ACHIK’s General Secretary, Bernitha Marak, clarified that the organization did not request the termination or resignation of the already appointed employees in any office memorandum or interview. Instead, they are demanding the filling of backlogged positions due to past administrative errors.
Marak emphasized that the establishment of the mini-secretariat and the establishment of the winter capital are different matters. She said the establishment of mini-secretariat is for the administrative convenience of the government, whereas, the winter capital is a long-standing promise to the A’chik people since the inception of Meghalaya as a state.
Former MCS official, Laben Ch. Marak, echoed ACHIK’s demands, stating that the organization is advocating for two main issues: the implementation of the backlog policy and the establishment of the winter capital in Tura. The organization also urged the government to relocate the additional secretariat office to Tura.
