ACHIK seeks appointment of Anaesthetist at Tura Civil hospital

Must read

Shillong, Sept 10: The Achik Conscious Holistically Integrated Krima (ACHIK) has urged the Minister in-charge Health to appoint an Anaesthetist at the Tura Civil Hospital.

Submitting a memorandum to the Health Minister, ACHIK said, the Tura Civil hospital serves as a critical healthcare institution for the entire Garo Hills region. However, this medical institution is facing a severe shortage of medical professionals.

“The absence of a dedicated anaesthetist has put immense strain on the hospital’s ability to deliver essential surgical services. Patients requiring surgeries are either forced to wait for extended periods or travel to distant hospitals, causing undue suffering and financial burden on the community,” ACHIK said.

Urging the Minister to expedite the appointment of a qualified anaesthetist to the Tura Civil hospital, ACHIK said the appointment will enhance the hospital’s health care service.

Further, the organisation said there have been discussions held to appoint non-Garo candidates as Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists (MLTD) in the hospital. It stated that it is essential to recognize the significance of employing local candidates for such posts as the local people “have a deep-rooted connection with their land, culture, and community”.

The organisation claimed appointing local MLTDs will not only ensure that there is no language or cultural barrier in patient care, but will also promote employment opportunities within the local population.

ACHIK also strongly urged that the department of Health to reconsider any appointments of non- Garo candidates for the position of Lab Technician in Tura Civil hospital.

“The appointment of non-local candidates could lead to challenges in communication, patient interaction, and cultural sensitivity. Given the cultural diversity of our region, it is vital that healthcare workers understand and respect the local customs and language to provide effective and empathetic care” ACHIK said in its memo.
