Guwahati, April 8: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved an $85.4 million loan to enhance industrial infrastructure in Tripura, aiming to strengthen the manufacturing sector, promote job creation, and integrate the state into regional and global value chains.
The Tripura Industrial Infrastructure Development Project builds on ADB’s earlier efforts in India’s economic and industrial corridor development. ADB had previously provided project readiness financing to the state government, laying the foundation for integrated, inclusive, and sustainable infrastructure across nine industrial estates under this initiative. Additionally, ADB’s technical assistance has supported business environment improvements, including the introduction of a new industrial policy.
“The lack of quality infrastructure significantly constrains Tripura’s ability to attract private investment into manufacturing and accelerate industrialization,” said ADB Senior Public Sector Economist Sameer Khatiwada. “This project will bridge the gap by expanding transport, electricity, water, and sanitation infrastructure in industrial estates while strengthening institutional frameworks to improve the business environment.”
Key upgrades in the nine industrial estates will include climate-resilient roads, stormwater drainage, culverts, and rainwater harvesting systems. Other improvements include energy-efficient power distribution systems, solar power installations, streetlights, fire stations, weighbridges, security systems, and upgraded sanitation facilities.
The project will also introduce compressed natural gas (CNG) buses and electric vehicles, with charging stations at key industrial estates.
Emphasizing women’s employment opportunities, the project will reserve at least 300 square meters of land in each estate for women-led enterprises and establish dedicated daycare centers and gender desks to support female workers.
