Dibrugarh, Nov 21: A 14-year-old Adivasi girl from No. 1 Molang village in Assam’s Margherita area has been missing for 21 days, sparking concerns of possible trafficking.
The girl, reportedly taken to Maruwa village in Namsai, Arunachal Pradesh, by a woman named Purnima Munglung, disappeared on October 30. Her family revealed that Munglung had promised to care for the girl and provide her with an education. “On November 1, we learned she had gone missing. We travelled to Namsai to search for her but couldn’t find her. A missing complaint has been filed at Ledo police outpost,” said the girl’s father.
Munglung, who allegedly filed a missing person report at Chowkham police station in Arunachal Pradesh, has failed to provide proof of the complaint, raising the family’s suspicions of foul play.
“The family suspects the girl might have been trafficked,” said Jyotish Phukan, in charge of Ledo police station. “The family had entrusted the girl to the woman for better education, but the circumstances are now unclear.”
This incident highlights the broader issue of child trafficking in the Assam-Arunachal border areas. Earlier this year, a crackdown by Arunachal Police led to the arrest of 21 individuals, including government officials, for involvement in a child trafficking and prostitution racket. Five minor girls, aged between 10 and 15, were rescued from Itanagar and nearby areas during the operation.
A senior police official noted that traffickers often target impoverished Adivasi families, exploiting their vulnerabilities. “These children are used as domestic help, and some are forced into prostitution. The trafficking network in Northeast India is actively preying on poor girls,” the official said.
