Shillong, Feb 15: Advocate Peter Challam on Thursday announced his decision to contest as independent candidate from the Shillong parliamentary seat in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Addressing a news conference here, Challam, who is a resident of Laikor, said he has taken the decision to join the fray in order to take up the various issues confronting the state.
He said the demand for implementation of the inner line permit (ILP) and inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution of India besides inter-state border dispute are some of the issues which are still pending for the past many years.
Apart from these, issues concerning health, education, unemployment, connectivity, safety and security of every citizen of the state will also be highlighted during the campaign, Challam said.
The advocate said that he is not against the sitting Congress MP and candidates of other political parties because he is concerned only about the welfare of the state and its people.
He also appealed to voters of the Shillong parliamentary constituency to vote for a candidate, who will take up issues affecting the people and the state.
