Shillong, May 12: Few days after reports of Garo Hills villagers falling ill after consuming ‘fish’ in post-death rituals held in Goalpara District of Assam, a similar incident related to food poisoning after consuming alleged ‘poisonous’ fish has occurred in Ri Bhoi district.
As many as 40 residents of Nongladaw village under Jirang C&RD Block in Ri Bhoi have fallen ill after consuming food at the funeral service of their relative at Mairangpur in Assam.

According to the information received, the villagers of Nongladaw went to attend the funeral service of their relative at Mairangpur, Assam and had food items that consisted of fish, potato, and dal. When they returned home, many of them complained of illness and were admitted at the Patharkhmah Community Health Centre.
While the exact cause of the illness is not known, the villagers suspect the fish, which they believe was poisoned, to be the reason for their condition.
According to the Doctor, L. Gashnga, the health care institution received the information on the May 9, where many villagers fell ill at the Nongladaw village and two ambulances were sent to shift the patients to the hospital.
He informed that over 40 villagers, including men and women, were admitted to the hospital. The patients informed him that they fell ill after consuming food at the funeral service held in Assam where they also ate fish.
He stated that some of the patients were discharged after receiving medical attention and few are still under medical care.
