Shillong, Oct 30 : The Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills on Wednesday has announced the reopening of the Them Metor road, connecting Mawlonghat to Bimola, starting November 4.
It maybe mentioned, This route has been closed to traffic since 2018 following protests related to the presence of the Harijan community in Them Metor. The protests erupted after two sons of a bus driver were reportedly assaulted by group of youths from the Harijan community.
According to the new order released by East Khasi Hills DC, R. M Kurbah, Vehicles will be allowed to ply from Mawlonghat to Bimola junction between 8 AM to 4 PM.
The stretch from Motphran till Mawlonghat and Punjabi Lane can be converted into One Way and No Entry will be imposed from Mawlonghat towards Motphran. Whereas, the Stretch of parking from Motphran till Mawlonghat, vehicles will have to park facing towards the flow of traffic.
Few buses parked on the Mawlonghat road near the traffic point will be shifted to MUDA parking lot opposite Anjalee Cinema Hall. The notification also directed that all type of vehicles including city buses, parked from Mawlonghat traffic point towards Punjabi Lane will have to proceed towards Punjabi Lane – Bimola Junction and beyond.
All type of vehicles parked beyond Mawlonghat point towards Anjalee Cinema Hall-Old Cherra can proceed towards Old Cherra and beyond. Whereas, all buses will be diverted at Grand Hotel junction towards Boucher Road and will not be allowed to proceed towards Police Bazaar.
The DC also notify that all SPTS (Red) Buses will not be allowed to proceed towards Mawlonghat from Mo bran point, but will be diverted towards Jeep Stand – District Council. There will be ‘No Left’ turn for buses at Bimola junction proceed both the directions i.e., towards Motphran and Grand Hotel Junction.
The Vehicles proceeding from Motphran point towards Mawlonghat Junction can proceed both the directions i.e., towards Punjabi Lane and Anjalee Cinema Hall – Old Cherra point.
No parking shall be imposed throughout the stretch starting from Mawlonghat junction till Bimolajunction (Punjabi Lane).
Both side parking of vehicles and levying fee thereupon at the stretch of Boucher Road will not be permitted. Only one side parking will be allowed at the above- mentioned stretch to maintain the flow of vehicular traffic.
Lastly, the notification directs that ‘No Parking’ will be imposed throughout the stretch of road starting from Grand Hotel/ Umsohsun junction upto Motphran point.
