Agartala, August 14: In a significant operation, the East Agartala Police have successfully apprehended two individuals involved in the smuggling of dry marijuana destined for Guwahati, Assam. The arrests were confirmed by a senior police official.
The Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Sadar sub-division in Tripura, Deboprashad Roy, revealed that the breakthrough was achieved based on specific intelligence. A dedicated team, led by Inspector Rana Chatterjee, who serves as the officer in-charge (OC) of the East Agartala police station, conducted a raid at the Chandrapur Interstate Bus Terminal (ISBT).
The suspects, however, managed to evade initial capture, fleeing the scene as law enforcement closed in. A determined pursuit by the police led to their eventual arrest in the Baldakhal area. The individuals were taken into custody with a sizable haul of 22 kilograms of ganja.
SDPO Roy emphasized that a concerning trend has emerged, wherein drug smugglers are now resorting to transporting smaller consignments of ganja via bus routes to evade increased scrutiny following the recent surge in successful drug interdictions by security forces. This shift in strategy highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement in tackling the persistent issue of drug trafficking.
The SDPO said that police have formally registered a case against the apprehended individuals, and they are slated to appear in court with appeal seeking police remand to facilitate further interrogation, for uncovering additional information about their associates within the criminal network.
