Agatha appeals to NGEA to withdraw strike in light of COVID pandemic

Tura, May 17: The Tura Lok Sabha MP has given an open letter to the striking employees of the GHADC requesting them to call off their five month long strike taking into consideration the COVID pandemic which is affecting all section of people in Garo Hills.

“I am writing this letter to request all the aggrieved employees of the GHADC to kindly accept the five month salary that the new executive committee has offered and immediately call off the agitation considering the global pandemic that has already begun to severely affect Meghalaya,” said Agatha K Sangma, Tura MP, in her letter addressed to the president of NGEA Senora Johnny Arengh.

“My heart goes out to all the family members of the GHADC employees who had to come across numerous tough times due to the financial crisis. In this trying time, when the infection rate in the state has increased and some of the districts are worse hit by the virus, it is really important that the differences are kept aside and the agitation is called off,” requested Agatha Sangma.

According to the MP, smooth functioning of the GHADC is required for revenue generation which would go into disbursement of salaries.

“To heal the financial health of the council, it is important that the employees resume their duties, only then the new EC would be in a position to resolve the issues of the employees that have long dogged the council,” Agatha said in her letter.

“I assure the NGEA that I would pursue the matter with the EC and the state cabinet in my best ability to devise a mechanism.
