Guwahati, Dec 30: The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), a key regional party in Assam, has rolled out grassroots initiatives—Gaone Gaone AGP (Village by Village AGP) and Nogore Nogore AGP (Town by Town AGP)—as part of its strategy to strengthen its base ahead of the upcoming panchayat elections. These programmes aim to enhance the party’s organizational reach across rural and urban Assam.
Addressing a year-end media briefing at the AGP headquarters in Ambari, AGP president and state agriculture minister Atul Bora emphasized the importance of these initiatives in revitalizing the party’s structure. He noted that the reorganization of committees at the gaon panchayat (GP), anchalik panchayat (AP), and zila parishad (ZP) levels would be a focal point, particularly in light of the recent delimitation of panchayat boundaries.
“We aim to connect with the masses and ensure Congress’s defeat in the panchayat elections,” Bora stated. However, he refrained from clarifying whether the AGP, a member of the NDA alliance, would contest the elections independently or in collaboration with the BJP.
Bora dismissed rumours of dissidence within the party, attributing differences of opinion among members to healthy internal debate. “While differing views exist on some issues, these cannot be termed dissidence. Attempts by external forces to create divisions for vested interests will not succeed. The AGP remains united and committed to its constitution,” he asserted.
He also downplayed recent public criticisms by senior leaders, including former minister Kamala Kalita and ex-MLAs Utpal Deka and Satyabrat Kalita, describing their remarks as “emotional expressions” typical in political discourse.
Preparing for Panchayat and Assembly Elections
Reaffirming the party’s focus, Bora stated, “Our primary objective is to defeat the Congress in the panchayat elections. As part of our outreach, we will reorganize committees at all levels to reflect ground realities post-delimitation.” He added, “We are determined to contest the panchayat polls with full force but have yet to decide on the possibility of alliances within the NDA.”
Looking further ahead, Bora announced plans to make 2025 the Year of the Mother Tongue, showcasing the party’s commitment to linguistic nationalism. “The AGP represents Assam’s linguistic and cultural diversity. People from different tribes and languages contribute to our vision,” he said, adding that ground-level events would reinforce these values and promote unity among Assam’s diverse communities.
Focus on Assam Accord and Unity
Reiterating the AGP’s identity, Bora highlighted the party’s dedication to implementing the clauses of the historic Assam Accord, a cornerstone of its political platform. He also denied speculations about leaders leaving the party to form a new faction ahead of the 2026 assembly elections, emphasizing, “Outside forces may try to instigate divisions, but we are united.”
“The new year brings hope and aspirations for us. We will work tirelessly to strengthen the party’s presence and serve the people of Assam,” Bora said.
