Agartala, July 31: Members of the CPIM women wing, All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) in Agartala expressed their outrage against the ongoing violence in Manipur by forming a human chain, wearing black ribbons on their mouths as a symbol of protest.
The protestors voiced their strong opposition to both the Manipur government and the central government for their failure to restore normalcy and peace in the troubled region. They specifically demanded the resignation of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, holding him accountable for the inability to protect women and children in the state.
Rama Das, the all India vice president of AIDWA, condemned the barbaric incidents that have marred Manipur for the past three months, considering them a dark blot on Indian civilization.
She referred to a viral video depicting the naked parade and gang rape of two Kuki women, Das said, “shockingly, there have been reports of two more gang rapes and various other incidents of violence against Kuki women, including arson and inhumane acts, allegedly organized by supporters of the BJP in collusion with the police.”
She added that the alarming situation in Manipur has drawn widespread concern across India, prompting protests even from the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and the Chief Justice warned that if the Manipur government does not take immediate and appropriate actions to halt the ongoing atrocities, the apex court might intervene.
Das further called for the removal of N Biren Singh from his position as Chief Minister and a thorough investigation into the incidents of violence against women.
Additionally, she demanded exemplary punishment for the perpetrators and compensation for the victims.
At the request of the police, the protestors later dispersed from the venue. Similar protests against the violence in Manipur, particularly targeting women, were previously organized by various women’s organizations in Tripura.
