Airlines cancel flights across northern India following military strikes in Pakistan

Guwahati, May 7: Following military strikes carried out by India near the border with Pakistan in the early hours of Wednesday, several airports in northern India suspended operations for the day.

Airlines took to social media to alert passengers about potential delays and cancellations, urging them to check the status of their flights and make alternate travel plans as necessary.

Air India said it had suspended its flight operations across 9 airports till noon of Wednesday. The affected airports include Jammu, Srinagar, Leh, Jodhpur, Amritsar, Bhuj, Jamnagar, Chandigarh and Rajkot. “In view of the prevailing situation, Air India has cancelled all its flights to and from the following stations – Jammu, Srinagar, Leh, Jodhpur, Amritsar, Bhuj, Jamnagar, Chandigarh and Rajkot – till 12 noon on 7 May, pending further updates from authorities. Two international flights en route to Amritsar are being diverted to Delhi. We regret the inconvenience caused due to this unforeseen disruption. Similarly, budget carrier SpiceJet confirmed on social media that flights across five airports – Leh, Jammu, Srinagar, Amritsar and Dharmshala – had been cancelled until further orders.

“#TravelUpdate: Due to ongoing situation, airports in parts of northern India, including Dharamshala (DHM), Leh (IXL), Jammu (IXJ), Srinagar (SXR), and Amritsar (ATQ), are closed until further notice. Departures, arrivals, and consequential flights may be impacted. Passengers are advised to plan their journey accordingly and check flight status at: https://spicejet.com/#status,” it said on its X (formerly Twitter) handle.

Indigo also took to social media to announce cancellation of its flights across 8 airports. These include: Srinagar, Jammu, Amritsar, Leh, Chandigarh, Dharamshala, Bikaner, and Jodhpur.

“In continuation to our earlier update and in wake of the prevailing situation, flights to/from Srinagar, Jammu, Amritsar, Leh, Chandigarh, Dharamshala, Bikaner, and Jodhpur stand cancelled for the day. We are anticipating changes in flight schedules across our network and sincerely advise all customers to stay updated on their flight status before heading to the airport. We remain committed to keeping you informed on subsequent developments,” it said on its X (formerly Twitter) handle.

All airlines have urged passengers and citizens to check with their helpline numbers and flight status before booking flights.

Flight tracking platforms showed a noticeable absence of commercial aircraft in the airspace north of Delhi, underscoring the scale of the shutdown and the heightened security situation in the region.

Authorities have yet to release further details about the military operations or how long the flight restrictions will remain in place.
