AIUDF chief Ajmal seeks Presidential intervention to protect Ajmer Dargah

Guwahati, Dec 3: All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief and former Member of Parliament (MP), Maulana Badruddin Ajmal, has appealed to President Droupadi Murmu to intervene in the ongoing case surrounding the Ajmer Dargah. Ajmal’s plea centres on upholding communal harmony and ensuring the protection of the revered shrine’s sanctity.

In a letter to the President, Ajmal expressed grave concern over a petition filed claiming the Ajmer Dargah, a centuries-old Sufi shrine, as a temple. He stated that this development has caused widespread distress among Muslims and people of other religious communities.

“The Ajmer Dargah is not only a revered shrine for Muslims but is also a symbol of communal harmony and respect for people of various faiths. It has been a place of peace, spirituality, and brotherhood for centuries,” Ajmal wrote.

He further condemned attempts to undermine the Dargah’s sanctity, calling them divisive and provocative, with potential to incite communal tensions and a threat to the social fabric of India, which is built on unity and coexistence.

Ajmal highlighted the importance of the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991, which protects the status of religious sites and prohibits any attempts to alter their character.

“This Act is critical in preserving peace and ensuring that no religious institution becomes a battleground for unnecessary disputes. It must be upheld to safeguard the integrity and sanctity of all religious places,” he said.

Ajmal also noted the trend of petitions in courts across India claiming mosques and other Islamic sites as temples, describing these actions as attempts to create communal tensions.

Ajmal urged the President to enforce the 1991 Act strictly to protect religious sites, particularly the Ajmer Dargah and to issue directives ensuring that such provocative claims and petitions are stopped to preserve unity and harmony.

“The Dargah is a symbol of respect, devotion, and coexistence. Moves to disrespect religious places must be stopped to prevent further tensions and safeguard communal harmony,” he stated.
