Guwahati, Feb 1: All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) president and former MP Maulana Badruddin Ajmal has sharply criticized the Union Budget 2025-26, dismissing it as a “bundle of repeated promises” that remain unfulfilled.
Ajmal accused the Union government of shaping the budget with an eye on upcoming assembly elections in Bihar and Delhi, rather than addressing pressing economic concerns.
Expressing disappointment over the meager rise in budgetary allocation for the minority community, Ajmal highlighted underutilization of funds. “The allocation increased slightly from ₹3,183 crore in 2024-25 to ₹3,350 crore in 2025-26, but the actual spending tells a different story. Out of ₹3,183 crore last year, only ₹1,868 crore was used. What’s the point of allocations if they are never fully implemented?” he asked.
Ajmal also criticized the absence of a clear roadmap for job creation amid rising unemployment and flagged the lack of inflation-control measures, particularly on essential goods. “There is no relief in railway or airfares, which directly impacts the price hike of essential commodities. The government keeps making promises but delivers little,” he remarked.
Despite his criticism, Ajmal welcomed the proposal for a urea plant at Namrup with an annual capacity of 12.7 lakh metric tonnes, calling it a beneficial step for agriculture. He also praised the tax exemption for incomes up to ₹12 lakh, viewing it as a positive move for the middle class.
However, he strongly opposed the increase in GST on agricultural inputs, warning it would hurt farmers grappling with rising costs.
Ajmal further condemned the budget for ignoring Assam’s recurring flood and erosion crisis, which devastates thousands of lives each year. “Flood and erosion are burning issues for Assam, yet the Centre failed to allocate significant funds or propose a concrete solution,” he said.
Terming the budget “disappointing and election-focused,” Ajmal accused the government of prioritizing political gains over economic welfare, stressing that without proper implementation of schemes, employment generation, and price control measures, the budget remains a document filled with hollow promises.
